The Aultman Serenity program is here to help you or someone you love if they have been a victim of assault. Recognizing the increase in domestic violence-related incidents, Aultman expanded the SANE program in to include services to survivors of domestic violence. To reflect these additional services, the program was renamed Serenity. The Serenity program ensures patients receive prompt treatment by nurses who have received specialized forensic training and to care for individuals impacted by sexual or domestic violence, child abuse and human trafficking.
This means better care for survivors in a confidential environment that is safe and compassionate. The mission of the Serenity program is to serve survivors with empathy, compassion, respect and encouragement while meeting the needs of our community and instilling confidence, building trust and restoring hope to move forward in the journey of healing.
Our program is dedicated to increasing awareness through community outreach, collaboration with advocacy services and providing educational opportunities to professionals and the community. The physicians and nurses at Aultman Hospital understand both the immediate and long-term effects experiencing trauma may have on patients and how that can impact their lives.
Our nurses have received additional specialized training in assault forensics and courtroom testimony. Patient safety is always maintained and all exams are completely confidential. Serenity also offers specimen collection when drug facilitated assault is suspected. In addition, patients are linked with programs and resources for proper follow-up care. Serenity nurses can care for patients over the age of 13 when it pertains to sexual assault.
Serenity nurses are available 24 hours a day. Aultman Alliance Community Hospital offers specialized sexual assault forensic exams for survivors of sexual assault. Decisions to report to law enforcement are based on mandated reporting guidelines. All sexual assaults must be reported, and this can be done without revealing any identifying patient information. Mandated reporting laws for violence include any injury resulting from gunshot, stabbing, second or third degree burns or any serious injury as well as any attacks on children, elderly or disabled persons.
Serenity nurses have received 40 hours of training in caring for patients after assault both physically and emotionally. Their education included sexual assault forensic evidence collection, photo documentation, simulation training and collaboration with community partners. Continuing education is required to continue to improve our practice based on what is best for our patients. What to expect at the time of your examination: You will be transferred to a private room as soon as possible. You will receive a medical assessment and treatment of any physical injuries by an Aultman Emergency Department physician.
